AOL AVS - what version am I running?

Do you have a question? Post it now! No Registration Necessary.  Now with pictures!

Threaded View
I can't find an "About" link anywhere in the GUI or help.  Does anyone know
how to find out what the version/build is?

We know it's based on KAV 6, so the question is "where is the current
build #?" All I know is that every once in awhile, after a update, I
get a message telling me to reboot to install the latest components
(not data bases, of course). I presume that means a newer build
is ready to install. But I see no record of build numbers anywhere
either.

If you open the GUI (right-click the taskbar icon), and click on
Service, it should display the current version, including hotfixes and
the date and number of the most recent signatures update. Much of the
AVS/KAV functionality is released and maintained through the
signatures, and there is no build number per se.

AVS is based on KAV 6 MP0.

MP0 -> KAV 6.0.0.299 with hotfixes a,b,d,e* is the same as
MP0 -> KAV 6.0.0.303 with hotfix e

MP1 -> KAV 6.0.1.411 with hotfixes a,b,c

MP2 -> KAV 6.0.2.614, released 30 January 2007

Only MP2 is Vista-compatible, and has full 64-bit support. There will
be a hotfix released soon for MP2 to fix a slow boot problem that can
currently be fixed manually by downloading a new bl.ppl file.

  http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=30501

That problem had been fixed during beta-testing, but was evidently
re-introduced just prior to the release of MP2.

When MP1 was released in November 2006, AVS was not upgraded. This
means that at this point, AVS is not compatible with Vista. If I see
anything about AVS being upgraded, I will post that info. If and when
that happens, AVS users will have to re-install AVS in order to get
the upgrade.

When the AVS/KAV/KIS updater changes certain KL modules and drivers, a
reboot is required. This happens rarely, not as much as monthly. And
it may or may not be required with the automatic hotfixes. Upgrades
from one maintenance pack (MP) to another require a re-installation
after manually downloading a new installer. Although it is now
possible to install MP2 over MP1, I would not recommend it. Save your
settings, uninstall AVS/KAV/KIS, and then re-install the upgrade (new
installer). The installation requires a reboot.

Here are the release notes for MP0 (should apply to AVS) and MP1.

*one of the KAV/KIS 6.0.0.299 hotfixes was withdrawn, and I think that
it was hotfix c.

Slight correction. Right click on the task bar icon and left click on
Open Active Virus Shield. Then left click Service.

Mine reads Product Version 6.0.0.303
No mention of hotfixes.

So apparently, 6.0.0.303 is the latest available AVS version then?

Yeah, thanks. Left clicking the icon once should bring up the AVS GUI.
Same as the 2 steps you describe. You can get to the settings from
there, or right-click the icon to get directly to the settings.

Again, left click the icon once and the GUI should open.

KAV 6.0.0.303 is the same as KAV 6.0.0.299 with hotfixes a,b,d. I
don't remember when AVS launched. KAV 6.0.0.299 was the first KAV 6
release. The KAV hotfixes go like this.

KAV 6, first release      == KAV 6.0.0.299
KAV 6.0.0.299 w/ hotfix a == KAV 6.0.0.300
KAV 6.0.0.300 w/ hotfix b == KAV 6.0.0.301*
KAV 6.0.0.301 w/ hotfix c == KAV 6.0.0.302*
KAV 6.0.0.302 w/ hotfix d == KAV 6.0.0.303
KAV 6.0.0.303 w/ hotfix e == KAV 6.0.0.304*

*These installers/releases never existed.

As I said, hotfix c (IIRC) was withdrawn, and so someone using KAV
6.0.0.299 or 6.0.0.300 will see hotfixes a(299 only),b,d,e installed,
not necessarily in that order. From time to time, when the developers
get around to it, they incorporate the hotfixes into the release, and
upload the new installer, appropriately re-numbered, to the download
servers.

Now the hotfixes and other module tweaks (DLLs, drivers and other
important stuff) only happen automatically if you have your Updater
configured to download them. From the GUI (or right-click),

  Settings -> Service -> Update -> Update Settings

You should have two check boxes

  x) Update Program Modules
  x) Update Network Driveres and Attack Signatures

If these are not available with AVS, let me know, and I will find out
if they are automatically updated with no option to turn them off.
Check out the KAV/KIS v 6.0 PDFs (Updater Section) for screen shots.

Now about hotfix e. Here is the info. I don't know if you even need
it, as it pertains to a broken updater.

Almost all of the downloads available from KL are on the KL FTP Server
-> ftp://ftp.kaspersky.com . A lot of neat stuff available, even if you
don't speak Russion. [g] The AVS patches, for example, are here:

  ftp://ftp.kaspersky.com/AutoPatches/kav_aol /

If you want to use your FTP client, this works:

  User:      anonymous
  Password:  *

You could download the patches to a temporary folder and compare the
files to those in your AVS install. If you have any questions, let me
know.

Actually, they are:

[x]  Update program modules
[x]  Update network drivers

Quoted text here. Click to load it

Dunno why anyone would want to disable them. I suspect they were
checked by default. I certainly don't remember having to check them.

Quoted text here. Click to load it

I didn't bother with it since my AVS seems ok.

Quoted text here. Click to load it

I downloaded all the files and checked most of them against the files
in the main AVS folder. They all agreed on version numbers and file
sizes. Version #s vary from  6.0.0.304 (prkernel.ppl)  to 6.0.0.308
(avpgui.ppl). So it looks like my AVS is keeping itself updated ok,
and if users leave the default update settings checked, they should
be ok without having to do anything special (it seems).

Thanks for the info, Ron. You're a good haunter of the KAV forums :)
