Both are about the same. Do yourself a favor and just use Microsoft Security
Essentials. It has proven itself to be quite adequate and it's free.

I'm not familiar with the Kaspersky antivirus program,
but I have seen signs on the Microsoft newsgroups
that the Norton versions older than 2009 are not
compatible with the Windows Mail and Windows Live
Mail email/newsreader programs from Microsoft.
Also, the 2009 and 2010 versions are supposed to be
compatible with the email portions of those programs,
but not adequately tested for compatibility with the
newsgroups portions.

That's okay, you don't need to scan e-mail and newsgroup articles
anyway.

Unless they're configured (or had it come out of the box that way) to utilize
the convenience of a 'blind doorman' type preview pane, that opens the way to
whatever shows up.

True, I hadn't considered other features than just proxy scanning or
programs just 'falling over' at the slightest provocation.
