Ad-Aware

Running an Ad-Aware Smart Scan on my XP Pro (SP2) PC this evening I
got this message, repeated when I tried afresh:
"The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service terminated unexpectedly"

Some googling has produced many posts, but I can't say I see a
conclusion. Can anyone advise please?

I'm running an Avira AntiVir scan at present, which is so far clear at
about 75%.

Hello Terry:

Not enough information is available to render a definitive answer.
HDD corruption could be high on your list of suspects.  Although more
effective applications than Ad-Aware are available now, Ad-Aware could
be uninstalled/reinstalled.  Checking your event logs and running
chkdsk and SFC are also possibilities.

Do you intend to update to SP3 soon?

It may be that your installation of Ad-Aware is broken. Have you tried
reinstalling it?

Running it in Safe Mode may help, and that would probably be my first
move before a reinstall. Sometimes a glitch in the registry, especially
on startup items will create your problem.

My personal opinion is that using more than one malware (not antivrus,
even though the boundary between them is getting increasingly blurred)
scanner is a good idea. Each uses different recognition systems, so one
may find what the other misses.

I'd add SuperAntiSpyware (SAS)
http://www.superantispyware.com /
and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)

Thanks both.

Duly installed MBAM and SAS and running them this morning. Must say I
like MBAM's clear UI.

I may just abandon Ad-Aware.

HDs all recently checked with chkdsk and SFC also ran recently.

I quit using the free version of Ad-Aware a few years ago as I thought
it was getting slow/bloated with the newer versions, and numerous
failures on getting updates. Just my opinion, mind you.
