I use Win XP Pro 3. I also use Avast virus checker.

On a few occasions Avast stopped a download with the alert: Win32:
Trojan-Gen (Other) Virus/Worm

Is this a generic virus or what is it?

Sounds like a heuristic trojan detection and one needs to analyze it to find out
more.

Well then, don't come crying to me when one bites you or poops in your
shoes.

My cat did that to a roommate once. Bit him, and took one in his shoe.
Considering the size of my cat, that was impressive in and of itself.
