september, then october to work with these signals but nothing has
materialised yet. what to do for xmas? bin it and buy a proper tele???

Well, I'm not in Ireland, so I don't know about the various cable services,
but I don't know what an analog signal has do with it. Here in the U.S., an
analog signal is the easiest and cleanest way to hook up and use an MCE
machine. With analog cable, you just plug the coax right into the PC and let
the tuner card find the channels.

With digital or satellite, you have a set-top box that still has to do the
"tuning", then it sends the signal (via s-video/composite/whatever) to the
PC, so you have to have an IR emitter stuck to the front of your cable box
so when you tell the PC to change channels, it can tell the box to change
channels.

Could it be something about the particular way the local cable signal is
sent?

When you say "it wont work" what exactly is the problem? Is it just the TV
element that isn't working - if so, what is the error message you get?
