- Why is my hard drive so slow?

I just got a 16x DVD writer, but it writes at only 8x because the read
speed on my HDD bottoms out at 8.6x, even after defragmenting.
I ran HD Tech and am getting only 15.5MBps. I have 2 new Seagate
Barracuda 7200s running on an older Epox 8K7A m/b (but it supports ATA
100), with 80-wire cables. I have DMA enabled, so what gives? A
friend is getting 42+ MBps on his PC.

Sounds like you are in PIO mode 4. I don't do windows, but the problem is
there if not the bios settings. Maybe look in device manager.
