Memory woes for Duron 1.2 Ghz

Hi there --
I now little about computers.  I bought a really cheap PC running
Lindows at a garage sale (was originally from Walmart).  It is a:

Microtel Sysmar747, AMD 1.2Ghz Duron

I have wiped Lindows, but it is too slow running XP.  It only has 128
megs of RAM!

Can someone tell me:

1. how much RAM it can take?
2. what kind of RAM it takes?
3. where to buy it online?

I have no original manuals for this PC, and the homepage for Microtel
is useless (see http://www.microtelpc.com -- they have no support for
older PCs).  I have spent 2 days googling, and my friend suggested I
post in a newsgroup.

Thanks guys,
Amy

Minimum of 1.5GB I would think.

Depends on what mainboard it has. Open it up and look.

You'll need to open up the side panel and get the numbers off the
mainboard. Someone said they used Gigabit mainboards, but you need to know
the model number. At a minimum, both the ram and cpu can be upgraded but
without the MB model can't tell you much more.

Well,I would have suggested going to Crucial.com but there's no listing
there for Microtel. It looks like you'll have to open the pc, take out the
memory and copy down what's written there.
You could try CPU-Z. It might give you just enough info to get started.
Downoad CPU-Z at www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php

Thanks for the responses!

And thanks, Blindside, for that link.  Maybe I don't have to open up
the computer afterall?

You said my computer can take:

Can I assume then I can buy 2x512 MB SDRAMs for 1024 MB total?  (And
replace the 128 that came with it?)

Furthermore, what about the speed or number of pins?  The link to buy
you gave me said "Rosewill 512MB 168-Pin SDRAM Unbuffered PC 133 System
Memory - Retail", so does that mean for my particular computer I need
168-Pin and PC 133, or will other combos work?

Thanks again for everyone's help!

Amy

You could assume that, but I wouldn't, it could be wrong. Look at this
way, you're going to have to remove the side cover to install the new ram
anyway. Why not check first. It could be you can expand the ram to 2 GB
using 2 1gig modules. You won't know that without knowing what MB you
have. Once you know what MB you have you can download the manual for it.
Then you will know all your options.

Some MB's will except both standard or DDR SDRAM ram (not at same time),
while others may accept only one or the other, tbut guess what you need to
know first?:-)

IOW's, quit being lazy and open the side cover and find the MB make and
model.

Ok, I agree.  I have opened it up.  Trouble is, I don't know what I am
looking for!  Here is what I saw on the motherboard:

BIG TEXT: ASRock
BIG TEXT: K7S41GX (Rev 1.02)
BIG TEXT: ATA 133

There was tons of other little writings, but that was the biggest.
Does one of these things help?  If not, where do I look? What am I
looking for?

Regarding memory, there are two long slots, one of them filled with 128
MB of RAM that is labelled:

"Infineon" (on the 8 little chips on the module)
and a sticker that says "128 MB 16x8 PC2100 3123481 W20857"

Does the info I have provided identify what my RAM options are?  If
not, tell me where to look.  I did not see a CPU at all, perhaps it is
buried beneath the metal grill on the motherboards? (Heat sink? Fan?)

Thanks so much!  I know I am a computer bafoon, but I am trying...

Sincerely,
Ann

I have downloaded the manul  now, but still don't know where to get
memory for this...

I began a new thread with a couple more questions at:

You found it. Make=ASrock. Model K7S41GX (Rev 1.02).

Yes the cpu is under the cpu cooler. This is actually a very decent MB. It
uses standard unbuffered DDR ram. And while it has PC2100 in it now, I'd
buy PC3200 to replace it. 2 Slots, eqch will take up to 1 gig of DDR
memory for a total of 2 Gig. Assuming you don't need more than 1gig, just
buy 1 DDR mem module of the size you want.

Yes, except since the Duron only runs a 200Mhz, you only NEED PC-100.  But
the 133 may be cheaper and easier to find.  On second thought, you might
find a good deal on PC-100 on Ebay, since it's both slower and less of a
universal market than PC-133.  Just don't get ECC or Registered RAM (that's
server memory).  The universal description would be 168-pin PC-100 (or -
133) unbuffered SDRAM

Don't get PC100 ram. ALL K7 chipsets support PC133. You are asking for
trouble if you buy PC100 and ever upgrade the cpu. In fact, if you can
find PC150 at a reasonable price, I'd buy that, and I did, and was glad I
did when I started overclocking the FSB (which also increases the memory
bus speed). BTW, if you haven't found out what MB you have, you don't
even know for a fact that you  don't need DDR ram or the speed you need,
or anything else. The cpu installed means nothing towards the ram type you
need. All will depend on the MB/chipset your system uses, and only the
oldest used standard sdram. second generation chipsets used ddr ram and
the last gen. socket A chipsets supported PC3200 DDR ram. Don't be lucky,
be smart and look.
