hope, however, to have some directions if not answers.
When I watch the video on the webpage
I can choose to see (color) subtitles.
(To play the video you should either live in UK or use an unblocker like
When I download the video using the Video DownloadHelper of Firefox and
play it with my video player (MPC-HC) the subtitles track.option in the
menu is grayed out.
My question is: should I use another video player, or do they use
another file for the subtitles?
I have also considered saving their webpage locally, to play the video
from a local directory, with the right code to play the video in the
browser with the subtitles, but it seems I'd have to adjust the code...

The subtitle is on separate file. You can use a GreaseMonkey script to get
it as mentioned from this site:
The subtitle is originally in TTML format which AFAIK unsupported for most
video player softwares, but the script claims to be able to convert it to
SRT (a common format) on the fly.
