Does anyone know a way to enable website visitors to left click a link
to download a pdf file.

As I understand it, whether a browser can view a PDF depends on
the the way it is set up either out of the box or by the user
with plug ins.  This is not something under your control. On my
machines, there is no confusion. On the browsers that are set up
to read PDFs, they read them. On those that do not, a notice
comes up with further instructions and options.

The only thing you can do besides putting the link, is to tell
people to right-click if left does not work (or words to this
effect). These words are frowned upon by some people who make
websites. I have done this sort of thing because I am never sure
what happens at the other end especially on Windows machines. On
Macs, everything is very deeply thought out. Some people think
this is because Mac people are cleverer than average. But others
think it is because they are not and need spoon-feeding. I don't
know what the truth is. I am going out to buy licorice and
cooking chocolate and will dip one into the melted other because
it has been on my mind since I revealed this secret recipe

No, and it's best that way. Users don't enjoy having the same user
interface elements, such as links to PDFs, work in different ways on
different sites. Consistency allows them not to have to figure out
what's going on every time they visit a new site.
