CSS Form Labels

Without using tables how can you organize some labels and input
boxes with CSS in this way,

|-------------------|  |------------------|
|            Login: |  |                  |
|-------------------|  |------------------|

|-------------------|  |------------------|
|         Password: |  |                  |
|-------------------|  |------------------|

I would like to control the width, height, text alignment, and
background color in XHTML that works in the most recent versions of
IE, Netscape/Mozilla, and Opera.  I can create this arrangement in IE
with the <label> tag, but you can't control the width in NS/Mozilla or
Opera.  I've also tried using inline <div>'s and <span>'s but nothing
I have tried works.
