Without alienating the client, it might be prudent to tactfully inquire
if it's a visible counter or just the statistics that they really desire.
If it's just the statistics that they want, set them up with a Google
Analytics account. Easy to do for you - a one time setup and a chunk of
JS to paste into each page. The client will get buried in statistics
tables and graphs that are visible via a web interface. Biggest bang for
the buck (US$0.00).
Also, check your ISP for web statistics support. Many have web page
statistics that are accessible once you do some one time configuration.
They may also support the cgi img style web counters as well if the
client is insistent on a visible counter on the pages(s). These are
usually restrictive cgi's that can only be run from pages resident on
