If I have a simple:
    <input name="something" type="text">
on a form, is there any way to change the cursor when the cursor is in the
input control to make it more visible?

One of my users has complained of losing the cursor on a large form and has
asked for a larger cursor. (Otherwise I'll highlight the input control that
has focus).

That's a good point, but a different cursor might be even more confusing.
I think highlighting the control with focus is your best bet.

Adding a little padding to the input would make it a bit easier to
spot. Left padding say about 0.3em, top bottom and right padding

There are 1000s of cursors available for d/l, and css allows you to add them
to elements:

<a href="tree.html" style="cursor:url(_curs/cursor16.cur),pointer;">Tree</a>

(You'll have to check if "input" is valid.)
