XP SP2 all updates.

Before installing MSN search toolbar, I had set an indexing service in XP to
index all files on C:\ and F:\ drive (the latter contains my data and
downloaded files, etc.). This is used by Windows Explorer search function.
Its catalogue files are in the system volume information folder. they take up
about 500MB.

My question is, if I use MSN desktop search, which I noted quickly built up
its own indeces in C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Desktop Search, also several hundred MB,

Can I disable the indexing service in services.msc and clean out that 500 MB
index?
Or does MSN desktop search use Indexing service?

Also, can I use desktop search, for example to search for dll files or exe
files and the like, instead of using search companion in Windows Explorer?

It certainly seems faster than using the native indexing, unless for the
latter I use the query the catalogue option and commands, which are rather
clumsy in comparison to desktop search.

It seems unnecessary to have both

I wrote in an earlier post, how I effectively stopped the indexing, although
it is not really disabled:

"I also managed to almost disable the desktop search (which I don't want
either - just tabbed browsing for the sites, that I have to use IE for): Exit
the initially started search from the menu on the "magnifying glass" in the
windows taskbar, then Uncheck "Automatically run desktop search" in the MSN
Searchbar options. Could also specify "Custom folders" as only search
location (and not specify any). However, would also like to get completely
rid of this part (and again: just get tabbed browsing)."

Hope this helps.

You can stop the Indexing Service, or alternatively only set it
to cover the directories of your choice. Anyway, it seems to
have nothing to do with the MSN Desktop Search. I have it
disabled and the Desktop Search works.
