or will standard XP drivers do the job?

I'm thinking of doing a clean install of Windows Media Center Edition
2002 for a friend who's having problems with his shuttle-based machine
and just wondered if I'll need to locate Windows Media Center Edition-
specific drivers first.

Any advice would be most appreciated.
Cheers.
Kush.

Some may work, some may not.

It is not unusual for some devices to have generic drivers for any version
of XP, but some components like the tuner and video card will probably have
MCE-specific drivers. Why not just download the correct ones to avoid
problems?

BTW, are you sure your friend has MCE 2002, that would be unusual unless the
system quite old and has never had any updates applied. Just updating the
system to SP2 would make the version MCE 2004 and if the system is less that
3 or so years old, it probably has MCE 2005 on it. If you are checking
Properties under My Computer, then you are seeing the underlying XP version,
not the MCE version. You have to go through the MCE interface to see the
correct MCE version.

Of course if the setup disks say MCE 2002, then that another story.

Thanks for the reply, James.
Yes, the system has an MCE 2002 CD with it hence my reckoning that
that was the OS.
I didn't realise that about the updates updating the OS to a newer
version.

I'll try to get MCE specific drivers and chance it with standard XP
ones for those I cannot locate.

Thanks again for your help though.
Cheers.

Maybe Windows XP Media Center 2005 would be a better choice.

Vista Home Premium is also available. Vista requires a DVD reader.
64 bit:

32 bit:

The motherboard drivers for Windows XP SP2 will work just fine. If you
install Windows XP Media Center 2005.

If you install Vista, you will likely have to go to the Motherboard
manufacturer's web site and download the drivers.

Media Center specific drivers are needed for the TV tuner.

Hi CSM1.
It's a fairly old machine so I think he just wants a clean reinstall
with his supplied CD which is all legit and which seems sufficient for
what he uses the machine for.
As long as it's all fresh and clean and back to the state it was in
when he first bought it he'll be happy enough
I've managed to locate the MB drivers which don't specify MCE
compatibilty but hopefully they'll be OK.
I've now also located the MCE-Specific drivers for his TV tuner so
that should work now as well.
Thanks again for your response.
Cheers.
Kush.
