First of all, a big thanks to you and everyone else who replied to my
post. I've told my friend that the best he could do is indeed make a
backup (on my system, he has no other machine) and return the machine
under warranty.

The problem with this warranty is the fact that he has bought his laptop
from a large electronics store, and not directly from HP or a computer
shop. These large stores are known for their slowness, and their lack of
knowledge of any kind of device they sell. The only thing they do, is
return the machine to the company from which they bought it, and wait for
it to get back.

Normally, this should take no longer than a week or two... tops. But
others have already warned my friend that this particular store does not
care that much about their customers, so they take their time, up to
several months. Items have even been known to take more than a year to
come back - or not come back at all, without compensation.

Thanks again - hopefully they'll repair the laptop in a reasonable amount
of time.
