I have a windows vista media center and an SME server that stores all of my
media files. I setup my xbox360 to connect to the media center. On the
xbox360 extender, I can play all content that's local to the vista computer
but nothing on the sme server. I have tried both the extender functionality
and the direct connection where media is served to the xbox via windows media
player. All of my permissions are set up correctly. Any ideas?

I have the same issue, except my content is on a 2003 Server. I have tried
various things, but the 360 still cannot see any shares on that server.
There was a possible solution mentioned on Andy Vanosdale's blog that
involved creating a MCX1 user and a login script, but it was way too many
steps for me to bother with. And it was created for a server on a domain,
not a workgroup, so no idea if it would even work.

Microsoft is aware of the issue but hasn't yet offered a solution.

The easiest way to share media with the Xbox 360 is to do the following:
At the 2003 Server of the SME Server
1. Share out the folders that have the media content.
2. Allow the everyone group rights to this shared folder.
3. Enabled the guest account
4. configure the firewall to allow file and print sharing.

At the Xbox 360, Using the Xbox 360 Controller
1.. Make sure Windows Media Center is running.
2.. On the Xbox 360 controller, press the Start button and then select
either My Music, My Pictures, or My Videos.
3.. Press the X button ? on the controller.
4.. Select Add Music, Add Pictures, or Add Video and then press the A
button on the controller.
5.. Follow the steps on screen to add additional content.
Note: Once you add additional media locations, the names or titles of the
media may not display on the console for a few minutes. During this time,
you can continue to use Windows Media Center on the Xbox 360 console.

If you would prefer not to use the guest account then we recommend using

Nope. Did the first 4 on the 2003 Server a while back, plus did a group
policy edit that treats everyone as anonymous, or something like that. And
the shared drives still aren't seen by the 360, yet every other PC on the
net can see them.

Any other suggestions?

If you logon to the Media Center PC as a non admin/non-domain user can you
access the shared folders as this user?
Is there a user acount named MCX1 on the 2003 server? If so please remove
it.
