I'm annoyed with the message that pops up in Windows Mobile Device Centre
6.1 whenever I attempt to connect my HTC TyTN II to automatically update its
QuickGPS data. The message reads "There is no email program associated to
perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is
already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control
panel." Since when has updating my quick GPS required an email program to be
installed? Yes I realise that message is for systems without Outlook
installed but really this shouldn't be popping up with the latest Windows
Live Email installed on a PC with the latest OS, Windows 7, installed on it.
I've manually gone into control panel and confirmed that "Windows Live Mail
is your next generation software that puts you in control of your E-Mail
experience." Does anyone know if a workaround to stop this message popping
up with all of the existing (free) software (installing Outlook does not
appeal to me). I've gone in to select nothing to sync but the message still
occurs.
I think Microsoft should urgently revise WMDC to make it more Windows 7 and
Windows Live Mail friendly, it might encourage more people to install
Windows Live Mail.

Thanks for the tip Anthony, I had high hopes and followed the instructions
to the letter. Alas that registry edit to create a new string doesn't seem
to have made a bit of difference. Have you tested this under Win 7 with the
latest Windows Live Mail version at all? I've even rebooted and tested again
but that annoying message persists.

I'm running it on Windows Live Mail 14.0.8089.0726 and it works on my copy
of Windows 7.
I'm running 32 bit windows 7. Are you by chance running 64 bit?

No, I'm running 32 bit and it's the Home Premium version build 7600. I've
double checked the registry entry and there are two almost identical entries
in there (amongst other entries) with the only difference being the name for
the original is DLLPath and the name for the one I added is DLLPathEx, the
rest of the value data and string type is identical between the two - both
have C:Program FilesWindows LiveMailsmapi.dll . It appears we have
identical setups but mine is not behaving the same as yours. Perhaps a
screen shot of the relevant section under regedit on your website would help
to point out any differences? I also have a subfolder or whatever the
registry equivalent is for Hotmail and one for Windows Mail (even though
Windows 7 doesn't have Windows Mail).
Thanks for your persistence with this Anthony. Again for any Microsoft
software developers who stumble across this thread, you really ought to fix
this problem - ideally with a new version of WMDC that also doesn't say it's
for Vista when you go to install it.
