Sorry if this post isn't 'techy' enough - I need to buy two new laptops for
work and I've been told by our in-house techys that I need Windows XP
professional - will media centre do just as good a job and allow staff to
normal work stuff or should I keep hunting for XP professional.

If you have a domain, which you likely do, then MCE won't work without a
hack. Hacks are generally unsound in the business world.

XP Pro is your best bet.
