Just in case someone can give me configuration information, or has something
constructive to say which doesn't start a flame war about Google DTS or
Copernic DTS or something else, I am re-posting the content of an opinion /
observation I have about the WDS Enterprise and its usefulness for desktop
searching.
I think the integration with Windows XP SP2 is appalling.
I've elected to use the WDS with Windows Explorer, so that when I am
exploring say C:\Temp, and click the Search tool button, the display gives
me the green Desktop textbox and below that a series of empty "Search
filters for Everything:"
Sure, if C:\Temp has been indexed I can use this in similar fashion to the
way I did with the MSN Desktop Search.
Questions: What is the unlabelled textbox above the Author: one? In fact -
for a new user - where are the instructions on using this entire interface,
which is less than intuitive?
If this location has not yet been indexed at all (I think it is a nice
feature, to tell me this fact), I can elect to use the Search Companion (and
I've dumbed it down so it hasn't the kitch "helpers"). An entirely new
XP-style search instance ("Search Results") appears.
I would have thought that my initial Explorer folder (C:\Temp) would have
been remembered. Or, if I had clicked on the ellipsis [...] button next to
the Folder: textbox, and browse for a different folder location than C:\Temp
(eg, "C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\_LYNE" - as I have just
done), I would expect that this new path would be retained and used in the
Search Companion's interface. Instead, I get a new interface (why not
replace the WDS one?), and the Look in: textbox has (example) "Local Hard
Drives (C:;D:)" as the default location.
This really is an appalling series of interfaces.

It says "From:" in my search interface. (If I've understood you correctly)
