Why is HDTV audio so low (compared to standard definition audio)? John 11-03-2005

Hi,

I have a MCE 2005 PC (with the latest rollup applied). I have an Nvidia
6600 256MB, ATI HDTV Wonder, and Haupauge PVR-150.

The standard definition recordings are perfect. But the audio on the
HDTV recordings (and watching live) is extreemly low. I have to turn my
receiver up by 20 dB just to get the same volume.

I heard this might be caused by the Nvidia MPEG2 decoder. Some people
say if you check "late night" settings it improves the problem. I
checked the panel for setting this, but the option is grayed out
because my receiver is connected to my MCE via SPDIF.

What's the best solution? It's a real pain to have to adjust the volume
each time I start and stop watching an HD TV show.

THANKS!
John

For what is worth I have the same problem with my HD Cable STB SPDIF output
to my amplifier when I have it send AC3 to the amplifier for HDTV programs.
Therfor I believe it is a characteristic of the amplifer since it is doing
the AC3 decoding and it does not have the ability to adjust volume levels to
a common level for different sources.

I have the opposite problem. HDTV is louder than standard TV. Here's my
configuration for comparison purposes in case it helps. I also use SPDIF and
connect the Audigy sound card to my A/V receiver.

Dell 8400 P4 3.2 GHz
512 MB RAM
160 GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (for OS) + 300GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (for
media files)
ATI Radeon X300 SE
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
ATI HDTV Wonder
ATI TV Wonder Elite
Cyberlink PowerDVD LE
Media Center 2005

Your external amplifier/decoder should have a "Night Mode" option, too.
Check the user manual.
