Why does the MSN Search take up 75% of my taskbar? Rod 07-07-2006

I've recently gotten a new theater-wide monitor (16:9 aspect ratio), and
I've replaced my video driver with one that will work with this monitor.
However, the MSN Search toolbar now takes up 75% of my Windows XP
Professional taskbar! Why does it do that? It is very frustrating to have
this really wide screen and have most of it taken up by the MSN Search
toolbar. If I have 3 applications open, then it has to put a scrollbar next
to the tiny area it allocates for the applications, while that 75% of the
taskbar is taken up by something I am not using most of the time. (When I
need the MSN Search toolbar, I want it there, so I don't want to get rid of
it.) I have tried to find some way of resizing the MSN Search toolbar, but
I can't find a way to resize it.

Help, please!

Rod

You're talking about the Deskbar, yes? Right click on the Taskbar and uncheck
"Lock the Taskbar". You should now be able to left click and grab the edge of
the Deskbar and drag it to the right to resize it. Once it looks like you wish,
right click the taskbar and select "Lock the Taskbar" again to prevent things
from moving around. I'm doing the above from memory as I don't have the Deskbar
on this PC, but post back if I got it wrong and I'll check a PC that is running
it.

Actually, I believe it's possible to "MOVE" the MSN Search Deskbar...it is
also possible to "REMOVE" it from the taskbar and use the magnifying glass to
open up later to perform a search. Unlocking and locking is good too, but if
you don't want it at all, it's more work than it's worth. There are many ways
to go about this, so I'll give 2 or 3 additional options how to remove/show
the bar:

1) Right click on the blue taskbar (where all open programs are displayed),
on the top of the context menu, move your mouse over Toolbars to view an
extended menu. In there, click on "MSN Search Deskbar". That will remove it
from view.

2) Second option, if you have the magnify glass in your toolbar near your
clock (bottom right corner is standard), right click on that to open your
context menu, and left click on "Desktop Search Options..." This opens up a
textbox with a menu on the left and options on the right. On the left, click
on "Deskbar". On the bottom right, you'll see a "Hide Deskbar" button. And if
the Search bar is already hidden, it will say "Show Deskbar". So in the
future if you ever changed your mind and wanted it visible, you can show it
again.

3) In addition for future, when you install this program, you're given the
option at install time if you'd like to display it. By default, it is
standard to have it shown, so you need to make the choice yourself. Selecting
the standard installation "makes the decision for you", so if you don't want
it, best thing to do is make the optional selection. If you have MS Outlook,
it may also install in there as well as next to your clock.

If you wish to keep it there and just change the size, then unlocking the
toolbar is necessary, otherwise, #1 or #2 are much more simple.
