I use alexa.com and compete.com to look at various social network
companies and other start-ups, and I wanted to know why rankings rise
and fall so much and so dramatically.

Thanks!

Alexa is based on the use of Alexa toolbars.
You install one, your site will rise.
You stop checking every day, and it falls.
You drop the Alexa toolbar, and it drops faster.
The whole thing is pathetic and pointless.

I suspect compete.com is not much better - neither have access to any 'real'
statistics (except for sites that choose to use their downloads), so
anything they offer is bollox.
