I'm looking for a free CMS solution that is convenient and user-friendly
for allowing me to incorporate my current website design to include
features of its CMS. I tried Joomla and, while it is relatively easy to
setup and administer, it seems to be designed more to encourage you to
design your website around it instead of letting you incorporate its
features into your current website. Any recommendations appreciated.
Thanks.

It depends on your site, but I'd give websitebaker.com a shot. One of
the best open source cms's that suits most not too complex websites.
It's easy to create a template based on your current design. It uses a
simple yet effective template system that uses simple tags that point
to header, content, menu's, news items, etc. So you probably can use
your current code and change the fixed elements for the appropriate WB
tags. Lots of plugins are available. Highly customizable. I use it for
most of my client sites.

Thanks for the recommendation. I looked at that app before posting and
couldn't see how to incorporate my current site with ease. I'll give it
a second and deeper look though.

Yes, I think you should :-) Just replace the content and menu of your
static site with basic tags. The support information is clear and
comprehensive: http://help.websitebaker.org/pages/en/advanced-docu.php
Very friendly user forum as well!

Thanks for that link, it's just the type of porting and conversion
documentation I was looking for. I'll start reading now.
