In WM2003 SE2, I can select the option so that it only sync on
connection. After that, there is no automatic sync. I have to
manually click the icon to sync.

In WM5, it does not have this option. So what happens if I need to
run and I pull the cable from my smartphone ? Would it corrupt my
data ?

I'm concern as MS took away this feature which I think would help to
safeguard my data from corruption !

Thanks.

No.

I have used automatic sync for years and have pulled my PDA from the cradle
without ever checking whether a sync is in progress without any problems.

It's not easy to detect whether you have lost a record or not.. until
much, much later. Or you might even know it at all until you try to
find the record. I think you can't conclude by saying that you have
no problem so far.

By the way, do you have any add on other than those default Outlook
sync ? eg Phatware, etc ?
And do you sync for PPC or Smartphone ?

I must admit that I only have about five years of daily use to base my claim
on...

Yep. I use TimeTTracker for recording how many hours I work for my clients.
If that did not sync correctly, I'd loose money. So far, I haven't :-)

Pocket PC.

I don't want to beat this to death. My point is: need a more
"scientific" approach to this. You might have lost some $ but you are
not aware.
