I have a very large hard disk and I am a programmer who needs to find files
occasionally that could be in alot of places. The old search tool handled
exactly what I needed. Now, and I don't know if this is true or not, in
order to find a file I have to index my entire hard disk (disks as I have
several external ones too). And that is a big job and a huge size index.

What can I do to have the old find folders tool back.

I spoke too soon. After checking further I noticed it was now available at
the left hand bottom -- "click here for search companion" of this search
tool. I don't know though if this now requires this indexing. I hope not.
Even the little dog is there. I would rather wait to find my files this way
because I can determine the locations to search and can always do something
else while waiting.

You can run Search Companion (the original Winodows Search) as your windows
default search method, or you can opt to use WDS. Search Companion, afaik
does not create an index but instead simply runs a search on the specified
path.
