What do people think of HP laptops?

I've only ever owned Toshiba models but I havent been impressed with
Toshiba build quality and dont like that they have dropped internal floppy
drives.

Whats confusing is the range of laptops HP sell.

Pavilions and HP Compaqs etc etc.

Anybody know who makes them and which are the ones to go for?

thanks
Keith

The best are probably the EVO's which is a business line--you can order them
online.
EVO's are more or less the successor to the Armada line from Compaq and sort
of like Toshiba's Tecra line (compared to Satellite).

They are good.

Then You'll have a hard time because a lot of notebook manufacturers don't
include floppy in their current offerings or offer them only as an option...

On the other side it's understandable, what should one do with an 1.4MB
storage medium? There are lots of much better alternatives out there
(CD-R/CD-RW, DVD+-R/DVD+-RW, USB stick, ZIP, etc).

It's simple:

Pavilion is the SoHo-Line, that means it's targeted at home users. That
means they offer a lot of features at a low price, but they don't have the
high build quality like the business models. They often incorporate AMD CPUs
or intel P4s (mostly desktop CPUs) and lack some features wanted for the
business use.

The HP Compaqs are the business models (nc/nx/nw/nr series). More expensive
than the Pavilions, but also more sturdy, better build, and with better
service. Intended for the business and professional use.

Without knowing Your requirements it's hard to tell to which You should go
for. I for example bought a HP nx7010 widescreen notebook two days ago (P-M
1.4, 256MB RAM, 40GB disk, DVD/CDRW, Radeon Mobility 9200 32MB, XP Pro) for
930EUR (~900USD). A great notebook, especially for that price. At work we
are going to buy nw8000 mobile workstations which are great systems, too. Of
course with a higher price tag...

Tell us what You want to do with it and what budget You have and we cann
tell You which HP would be a good choice...
