I think my brother my have got this confused with Media Player 11 (which you
do have to have MCE2005). You can upgrade MCE2004 or MCE2005 to Vista Home
Premium or Vista Ultimate.

Either way, I'd highly recommend you (the OP) do a clean install, and not an
upgrade. This will take more time to do, but in the end, it will most likely
save you a lot of trouble.

As long as none of your previous recordings are flagged by the broadcaster
as copy-protected, they will continue to playback in Vista.

FWIW: My experiment with Vista....

My computer much happier with upgrade from MCE2000 than with clean install.
Me too... Upgrading takes much much longer than a clean install, but the
time is well spent... no reinstallation of programs, files, settings,
backups, etc, etc.

DRM = Digital Rights Management, or as we think of it, Digital Restriction
Management. Any show recorded from a Premium channel such as HBO or Showtime
generally has DRM that allows you to record, and view on that PC but no
other. If all your shows came from "basic cable channels" or broadcast
channels then it probably has no restrictions.

Back to your first question, yes, I would prefer a clean install just on
general principles. And your recorded TV should play fine on the new OS,
subject to the DRM limitations above...

Sorry. Jason's right. I mixed it up with WMP11.

That said, one should do a clean install always. If it can work after an
upgrade, you can just as easily get it to work on a clean install. This
way, you won't run into unintended side-effects due to an upgrade.
