What type of video card, how much memory, and speed would I need to
sucessfully upgrade to the Vista Home Premium Operting system and still have
a Media Center computer?

I would assume that I would need to completely get rid of MCE 2004 and do a
clean install of Vista, correct? Would it still be able to run any recorded
show that were done with MCE 2004?

Your recordings will play on Vista, if they're not DRM'ed. You could either
do an upgrade or a new install, but a new install would format your C: drive
and erase any data you have there. I think Vista claims to run on a 1Ghz CPU
with 512Mb, but you'll really want twice that speed and twice that RAM. As
for graphics, I think 128Mb is the smallest that will run the Aero 3D
graphics, so you could find a decent board in the $50-$100 range. ATI
currently has more stable drivers...

You'll have to check to see if your tuner card has Vista drivers...

Just so there is no confusion (based on the subject line), you can't upgrade
to Vista from MCE2004.
You'll need to do a clean install.

You're kidding, right? Given that the 2004->2005 upgrade was offered for
only a short time, from only some OEMs, I would have thought the upgrade
software would consider it XP Pro just like any other XP Pro-variant...

A clean install would probably be better anyway correct? One of my questions
was about the recorded tv files that we recorded with MCE 2004, as long as we
save the files along with any other data before we wiped the hard drive they
would still work with the Vista MCE once that operating system was installed?
I don't understad what DRM'ed is.

Thanks.
