(Assuming you are using Windows.)
The card will come with software to do the wireless connection, but if
you are using Windows, XP is the easiest to use. It auto-detects the
SSID of the network, and connecting to it is very easy, pretty much
automatic after the first time you connect.
Plug in your card and install the software. That's about all there is
to it. Some WiFi networks (aka Hot Spots) are locked to prevent
unauthorized access. Others require a username/password to get on
(you may have to pay for the account). You just bring up a web
browser to get started - you get redirected to the login screen if
there is one.
Make sure you do all Windows updates to get the latest patches from
MS.
I have an internal mini-PCI WiFi card, but my 2nd choice would be the
PC Card (aka PCMCIA) card. USB would probably be my 3rd choice. I
like having the card plugged in solidly, not dangling.
