(This does not directly refer to your site:)
Left with a choice between HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0, or XHTML 1.1,
and possibly HTML 3.2, XHTML 2.0 or HTML 5.0, there is no
/standard/, there are /specifications/.
To me, a »standard« for websites, would be a selection of a
single one from those specifications to be used on all web
pages, either by enforcement through authorities or by

overwhelming use (say, > 75 %) of this single specification.
Today, IIRC, only 10 % of all web pages are valid. So,
technically, the other 90 % do not comply with any
specification. This means that pages complying with any
of specifications mentioned make up for less then 10 % of
the WWW. So none of the above specifications can be seen
as an actual standard. An example for a standard that is
both specified and widely used, would be the gregorian
calendar (at least in certain countries) or the metric
system (in certain countris). So, such a thing as a standard
actually is possible, we just do not have it in the web.

The above is such a great idea that I have decided to take it
one step further. I am converting all of my web pages so that
they only display properly when viewed with GeoWrite running
on the GEOS operating system on a Commodore 128. This is correct
by all the standards in place for Commodore systems. Yes, it
is a bit of extra effort buying a C128 on eBay, but like you
say, it is the users' job to use the right tool to view web
pages. Thanks ever so much for the enlightenment; I thought
that it was the web author's job to avoid putting up arbitrary
barriers to the majority of his readers for no apparent reason.

Well, my experiment was a failure. There were still a few people
who could read the webpage. I am in the process of making it so
that you can only read the page if you are running Electric
Pencil on a PDP8 running an Altair simulator.
Thanks again to Eric for showing me how much more design freedom
I can have if I just manage to get rid of all of those pesky users...

Another is to stop catering to broken browsers.
Or would you like to argue that IE is not broken? I think I could still
probably find the places in the IE Blog where they admit IE is broken
(and explain their reasons why they will not fix it).
I must admit that changing http://carlylegardensgnome.com to correctly
served XHTML has been a very refreshing experience. Hardly any technical
problems (so far). It turned out I didn't even need any server changes,
since files with an xhtml extension were served correctly by default.
But a number of people basically saying you can't do that!
