It could be a Windows thing. A couple of years ago I set up a Thinkpad
T-23 for a friends dad. When all was done I made a Ghost image of the
Windows partition.

Then some months ago the CD/DVD-reader went all dead. I was quite sure
I would find something or other that had messed it up, but I didn't.
Not even a reinstall on top of Windows (XP), would bring back the
CD-reader to life.

Then I ghosted back the image of C:, and sure enough that did bring
the CD back to life. It has worked fine since.
