hello first time posting here, seems like a great community....

I bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 w/ the following specs:
Inspiron 6400, Intel Core Duo processor T2400
(2MB/1.83GHz/667MHz)
15.4 Inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WSXGA+, for
Inspiron 6400/E1505
1GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm for Inspiron 6400/E1505 Intel Integrated
Graphics Media Accelerator 950 GM
60GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive for Inspiron 6400/E1505

The computer is having some type of catastrophic system error and
going blue screen. I also have a Verizon Air Card for wireless
internet which uses a pcmcia slot, yet dell only ships high end
laptops with an express connection. I was going to keep the laptop
despite the connection problem with my air card, but I have had one
problem after another...

So my question is what laptop should I buy with similar performance?
I'm thinking about an HP, but am just starting my research. Any
thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated. Want something that
is reasonably light, has a good screen and is fast. I do a lot of
multitasking with applications. Thanks in advance for the input!

What is the error?

The error message is quite long.... Basically the message is:

Windows shut down to prevent damage to your computer

Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal

Disable BIOS Memory options such as caching or shadowing for use in
safe mode press F8

Technical Info:

stop 0x000000D1 (0x0000000C, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xAA6A6F21)

portcyls.sys -Address AA6A6F21 base at AA6A6000

Beginning dump of physical memory... Physical memory dump
complete...

This is most of the technical info that I recorded with pen and paper.
I'm not in the IT profession, so don't really know what all of this
means. Microsoft Online Crash Analysis reports the problem as a
conflict with a device driver.... I have troubleshooted this with
Dell and have had no luck. Peformed hardware diagnostic
troublshooting the video card and have removed Ram physically and
reinstalled.

Dell says it is more than likely a corrupted partition of Windows XP.
If I reinstall Windows, it should fix the problem. My problem is I'm
approaching my 21 days to return the laptop real soon. I can't
afford to reinstall the OS and then discover more problems after the
return period is up. Any advice would be appreciated!

No, the stop error number 0x000000D1 indicates the typical driver error,
as does protcyls.sys. If you have installed USB devices I suspect one
of them as the source. These can be difficult to track down. I think
that I would return the unit rather than spending the time to correct it
also.
