WMP only downloads the handful of CODECs that Microsoft itself provides. Any
3rd party CODECs, plugins and auxiliary utilities you'll have to source out
yourself. MKV (Matroska) and OGM (OGG Media) files in particular don't just
require CODECs. WMP doesn't support either file type natively. They are
container file formats that may have multiple video and audio streams,
chapter support, as well as multiple subtitle streams within them. Along
with the various CODECS that could be used for the video and audio streams
within them (FFDSHOW was suggested and it covers most of them by itself)
these files require 3rd party splitter software to sort out the different
streams and provide selectable access to the streams you want to use.
