My WMDC has stopped working when trying to Sync to my Dell Axim. When the
Axim is placed in the cradle you hear the "thunk" sound from the USB finding
the device. when you try to open WMDC you get about 10 seconds of the
"spinning ring" on the mouse cursor and then nothing. Event viewer has the
following errors:

Failed to start the Windows Mobile-based device connectivity service due to
EnableRAPIMgr(0x80070005) failure (see data for failure code).

which is followed by this information note:

Windows Mobile-based device connectivity service shutdown.

I've tried everyting, repairing the WMDC, reinstalling the WMDC, rolling
back to a restore point prior to the problem starting. nothing seems to fix
the problem. One other thing to note and I'm not ssure it's related but
Windows media center stopped working about the same time as WMDC stopped
working.

Any ideas would be great.

This is a pretty big clue. You probably got & applied another
broken Windows Update patch. MS is pushing out so many of
these because Vista is so broken that they aren't putting any
time at all into testing them.

Try a system restore to approximately before things went south.
