Are there any plans to bring this back? I notice 4.5 beta does not have
this either.

Not that I know of, but do be aware that WM5 and AS4.x does sync fine over
the internet, over the air, via WiFi, etc. if you are syncing directly with
the Exchange server. That is also the requirement for the much touted push
e-mail capability. What has been removed is the ability to connect to an
Outlook client via IP, regardless of what the medium is.

Yes, but my company has an SSL VPN and the Exchange server sits inside this
on our corporate network (ie, it's not visible from the internet).

If active sync had internet sync back, I could make it visible from the
internet. Sure it's a security risk, but I could host an open source VPN
that is compatible with the built in VPN support in WM5.
