WM 6 causes DHCP to fall over on Win 2003 SP2 why? Geoff Foden 01-31-2008

I have Active sync 4.5 running on a win 2003 server at SP2 which also hosts
Exchange 2003 SP1. There is an internal DNS on the server and an external DNS
from the ISP. WM6 (on HTC TyTn ll) syncs well by mobile GPRS or by Wifi to
local network when the full domain name is specified, which is resolved
either by the internal or external DNS. When connected by Active Sync using
USB the phone has to have the full external name domain name excluded in
connections (advanced tab) on the phone or else it will not sync up with
exchange. I don't mind this although it is a nuisance to have to change it.
However if the phone is connected by USB without the excusion specified DHCP
in the server fails. It restarts twice then fails to auto restart. Surely
Active sync should not allow Win 2003 to fall over. This is very repeatable.

Hi,
Do you allow the device to access the internet via the Windows Server 2003?
This would be required to sync because the Windows Mobile device only knows
the external IP for the Exchange server.

Chris, First thanks for taking an interest in my problem.

I think I should start with a bit more information about the
configuration.This is a small
office. The Win 2003 server is set up with Exchange, DNS, DHCP and active
sync all running
on it. It is not used as a work station. The server sits on a small LAN with
a Netgear
WAN/LAN/Wifi box acting as router with NAT. DHCP is off in the router.

1) There seem to be no settings in WM6 to specify if the ACtive Sync
computer allows access
to the Internet. In Active Sync Connection settings on the server
"This computer connects to" is set to automatic.

2) If I open IE on the server and enter HTTPS://FQD/Exchange (where FQD) is
the full
external domain name I would use, then it correctly resolves using the local
DNS.

3) I think I am getting a shaft of light in the realisation that Active Sync
is not needed
in any way to sync mail by mobile network or local Wifi. It's actually down
to IIS.
I only installed Active sync on the server because I thought it would have
to be available
24/7. Would this mean that I can uninstall Active Sync and say install it on
my workstation?
I need it somewhere to load software onto the phone.

4) DHCP still shouldn't fall over though. And why does it stop restarting at
2 attemps.
It is set to retry continuously in the Service property box.

Thanks for taking an interest

Geoff
