WDS, MSN Search Toolbar, WLT not finding anything... Winsaurus 05-12-2006

Hi!

I have tried many versions -from MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop
Search and even the latest Windows Live Toolbar- and to my surprise neither
of them find anything when I make a desktop search. I have installed,
re-installed and re-indexed many times with no success. I am using a Dell
Inspiron 8200, Windows Xp SP2 in spanish with 768 MB, a P4 processor and a 30
GB disk, so I don't think is a matter of performance. Strangely, I use the
English version of MSN Search Toolbar with WDS in a 500 Mhz Compaq Presario
and it finds everything without any problem. I don't think it is something
about the language, since I have used both (English and Spanish) versions in
my Inspiron and nothing works.
This is really an annoying problem that I thought it will be repair by
now, but for some reason WDS always fails to find any file. In fact, after
indexing and query for a search it gives me "Windows Desktop Search couldn't
find the file..." Now, any suggestion will be grateful. Thanks for your time.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your help. Yes, I have used the English and Spanish version in
my Compaq Presario to see if it was a language-related problem, but both
versions work perfectly under Windows XP in English. Now, when I tried under
the Windows Xp (Spanish) on my laptop the WDS function on MSN Search Toolbar
or in Windows Live Toolbar doesn't find anything in either the Spanish or
English versions of the utility. (Indexing would not help either). To add
that not even the Anti-phising filter addin for MSN Seach Toolbar doesn't
work either (the icon is missing in the toolbar, no matter the options in
MSN). So, perhaps the WDS needs some refirements on a Windows XP in Spanish
enviroment; since under my Compaq everything works fine. Again, thanks for
your interest and help.

Here's what gets me about this. You have two systems that can run the same
OS and the same application and one works the other doesn't. In this
scenario, I have a hard time pointing my finger at the app+OS combination...
I'm more inclined to believe it has something to do with the laptop.
Meaning a driver, anti-virus or other environment specific device or
software that's stopping this from working properly.

Standard troubleshooting would dictate updating to latest SP for the OS and
the latest version of WDS 2.6.5 (3.0 is beta, don't go there while
testing!).

The other thing to consider is getting the MUI for Windows and WDS. Install
the Windows Spanish MUI, install latest version of WDS, then install the WDS
MUI. Due to localization issues it is possible that WDS calls objects by
the english name and the app uses the international (localized) name, they
don't mesh and no items are returned in search. If your OS and WDS are both
set to the same language through MUI or installing the spanish version of
both (and same language version of Outlook) you may see better results.

Let me know how things progress, I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Jeff

Hello

WDS didn't work on my system since ever, always "0 results" regardless the
search string. Had then suspected a MDAC Error and the Microsoft Component
Checker
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8f0a8df6-4a21-4b43-bf53-14332ef092c9&DisplayLang=en)
told me that "MDAC 2.7 SP1 on Windows XP SP1" is installed on my system, but
I have Windows XP SP2.

Have then reinstalled Windows XP SP2. To my surprise, I hadn't to reapply
all the security patches again that are released after XP SP2. And after the
reboot WDS started to work immediately! The MS component checker also told
me now that "MDAC 2.8 SP1 on Windows XP SP2" is installed.
