I have an HP Digital Entertainment Center Z540 and am running Windows XP
Media Edition and none of the Volume Controls will actually adjust the volume
coming out of the speakers. That being said, the controls will adjust the
slider on the "Master Volume" bar, but that doesn't change the volume. The
only way to change the volume is to move the "Wave" slider, which the
keyboard and remote short cut key's won't change.

I am connected to an external amplifier through a digital fibre optic cable,
if that helps.

Is it a bug, a glitch or what?

If you're using SP/DIF for your audio output, this is a known issue. There is
no volume control on the SP/DIF feed, you need to adjust the volume on your
external amp.
