I recenetly purchased laptop (mx8711 gateway) from BestBuy which has
preinstalled Microsoft Vista.
My understanding was it will also include CD for Vista O/s if I need
to install it in future or whenever i want to re-image. But I was
wrong.
BestBuy said they don't sell software with it and I can always restore
it to factory setting whenever I want as laptop will have backup
drive.
Is there any disadvantage of not having CD with me?
I checked few other websites and looks like everybody is selling
Vista pre-installed and they are not offering software separately.
Let me know your feedback about buying system without the software CD.
Thanks.

The backup drive is most likely a partition on your HD. If your HD goes
belly up....you are screwed.

There is a restore partition on your hard drive. You were prompted when you
turned on and activated your version of windows to make a Restore Disc set,
which you probably ignored and clicked it off.

There is a utility that will allow you to make a restore disc set (either
CDs or DVDs) from the hidden partition. I suggest you read the
documentation that came with the computer and make the disc set as soon as
is possible. As Marcello stated, if the hard drive dies, you'll be stuck
without a restore set.

I recently bought my first laptop and keep being asked if I want to make a
restore set as above. I've been postponing it because rather than make 5 CDs I'd
rather just make one DVD, but I don't know which type to buy, + or -. Is it
obvious if I click on the correct button or will I lose the opportunity to make
the set? Or does it not matter?

I'd gladly go and get the right one if I knew which. Help would be welcome!

Sometimes they way they have it setup you can't backup to CDR
As with my sony. It would not allow me to make the image to dvd, only to
cdr.

You need to find out if your writer is + or - most do both. If it does
do both, then the choice is yours. I prefer -
