I'm having problems connecting to the internet. This may be associated with
malware or a virus. But although I can install a suitable program to look at
it and maybe remove it I can't download the latest virus signatures. What's
the best way forward for me to see if I've got an infection which may be
causing my connection problems?
Ta

You need to get all tools/updates from a different, known-clean computer.
Put them on a USB thumb drive or burn to CD-R. The infected machine
shouldn't be connected to a LAN or the Internet anyway.

It may NOT be realted to malware. You need to prve this first.
What makes you think it is malware related and not ISP or hardware/networking
related ?

I agree, it's not necessarily malware-related. However, because I was having
some problems with my firewall/virus program (Comodo) I disabled it for a
while. I'm not sure now whether my connection problems stem from before or
after this event, but it seemed to me reasonable to ensure that all malware
is removed before trying to repair connections.

You need to do network diagnostics first.
You are on BTInternet.
How do you access the Internet (ex. aDSL) ?
What equipment is between you and the Internet ?
Have you checked to see if there are any problems with your ISP in your area ?
