I've been running some hobby sites and charity sites from a shared
multi-site hosting package for a few years; performance is bearable, then it
tails off, and then I move - ad nauseum. But, to be fair, the price was
right.

I'm now developing a commercial site (with backend application(s)) for a 3rd
party - nothing too outrageous, but I need better hosting. In addition, I'm
negotiating with a company to host and support their portfolio of (small)
sites.

So I'm now looking at entry-level Windows VPS hosting (needs to be Windows
for my back-end applications); I don't want to be too ambitious (neither
revenuse streams will be *that* lucrative) nor do I want to aim too low.

I'm budgeting at around £250/yr approx, and for that amount there are a
range of packages available. Disk space isn't an issue, nor is bandwidth -
but I am hoping for respectable responsiveness, so Guarranteed RAM seems to
be the metric of interest. Value range from 128Mb up to 1Gb, but 256Mb-512Mb
is typical. Another important factor is CPU share; most services offer an
equal slice, but some offer 'upto' 30%.

I could trial any number of services (and I may do in time) but ideally I'd
like to aim at the right spot first time. But I have no idea how much RAM I
should aim for... I'd never run a server (in my day-job) without 2GB+ of RAM
and a dual-core processor. Clearly that is overkill (and unaffordable!), but
how low should I go? Likewise with CPU resources, I'm unsure. I'm erring on
the 'equal split' packages, so that I get a decent minimum slice of the
proverbial pie, but these CPU share figures have a distinct smell of
snake-oil.

So, has anyone got any (Windows) VPS experience that they can share with me?

And perhaps some recommendation? Clearly I'm in the UK, but I'm not averse
to using overseas hosts (as indeed I do now).

Thanks

CJM

PS. Yeah, it's been a while....

I've got a couple of Windows VPS's with PowerVPS. I'm pretty happy with
them.

Jerry,

I'd already stumbled across PowerVPS. Looked ok, but the Basic package isn't
Plesk capable (which I'd prefer), and the Advanced is a bit too pricey for
now.

Which package(s) do you have? And how many sites do you run on them? I'm
interested to see if you can feel the difference between the 256MB & 512MB
allocations.

I liked the look of PowerVPS; I might consider going Plesk-less if I can't
find a suitable alternative.

Thanks

Chris

Check webhostingtalk.com for recommendations. You'll get a much wider
response.

I have a shared hosting deal with them but they should be able to help
you out.
