Hi guys,

Is there a way to watch live tv while recording another show on Vista?
I have a hauppage 1600 card. I do not have over the air HDTV. I do
have a set top box from cablevision. Which works well now and I can
record and watch pretty much what I want, except of course for the
HDTV channels from cablevision which show the gray bars on both sides
of the picture. But what I would like to do is while recording a show
in VMC via the set top box, can I watch another live show maybe
playing at the same time I am recording another show? For example let
us say at 8pm Ghost whisperer and Lost are coming on at the same time.
While recording Ghost Whisperer can I watch Lost or even record Lost
at the same time? If so how do I do that in VMC.

Thanks in Advance

Yes you can record one program while playing back another.
However, since your 1600 has only one Analog Tuner and analog encoder chip
to it can only receive one analog signal at a time. It can however also
receive an ATSC OTA digital channel using and antenna at the same time so
that you could watch one and record the other concurrently or record from
both and watch a 3rd previously recorded program

Since you say you don't have OTA HDTV, you'd need to install a second tuner
with an NTSC tuner in order to watch one channel while recording another at
the same time.

Thanks doug as you seem to have understood what I want to do exactly.
May I ask how I would do that? I mean once the other tuner is
installed (because I do have one available) how would I go back and
forth between tuners in Vista Media Center??

You don't need to worry about it, as long as its Media Center compatible.
MCE will pick a tuner to use as "preferred" for recording and one as
preferred for watching Live TV. Now, depending on what's actually going on,
these may not be used as preferred, but say you're watching Live TV and want
to record another program. MCE will automatically switch to the unused
tuner for the recording since the one you're "watching" is tied up.
