I would like to be able to synch my HTC P3300 over the internet with my home
PC. I've worked out that I need to install Microsoft Exchange to do this.
Why? If it can synch over bluetooth and wifi, why can't Mobile Device Center
also synch over the Internet?

I've been trying to understand how to install and use Exchange from the
Microsoft site but the time investment in understanding how to use it seems
huge. Why can't Microsoft just make it simple?

Want the short answer? Exchange Sync is inherently secure due to the
protocol and encryption applied. Syncing to a desktop via AS or WMDC is in
the clear. That presents a security issue and therefore was removed. (used
to work)

P.S. you can sync to your PC using WMDC over BT, you just can't get too far
away.

Yes you can turn WEP/WPA on for WiFi but that protects the over the air
piece. The over the internet piece would have your data totally in the
clear.

As a cheaper and simpler alternative (for a single PC-to-single PPC setup)
try www.emoze.com.

Are you trying to setup your own Exchange server? For a single PC and PPC,
your own Exchange server is a wee bit overkill! Normally a single user
would use a hosted Exchange provider, like 1&1.com, for $7/month, rather
than invest in SBS just to sync a PPC.

Exactly! Exchange server is a hugely complicated overkill. All I want to do
is set Outlook on my PC to download emails from my several email accounts
throught its excellent junk filter, then synch the resulting messages with
my PDA, so I get the important stuff hassle free. Do I really need the
overkill of Exchange to do such a simple task????

But your intent is to do this (synch the resulting messages with my PDA)
from the internet, not cabled to your desk, right?
