Using Media Center Without A Remote Alan 05-14-2008

Windows Media Center is driving me nuts. It works just well enough to be
worth using, and poorly enough that it's infuriating.

To begin,

- It was pre-installed on a refurb Dell I bought, and it didn't come with a
remote. Is it even possible for it to work well without a remote?

- When I'm playing a DVD, there's no way to step through chapters. There are
chapter - and + buttons but they don't do anything.

- When playing a DVD, there's no way to go back to the DVD menu.

- When playing a DVD, the fast-forward and reverse buttons are very flaky
and slow.

Just to give you some idea what this means -- if I'm playing a movie and
want to go back to the DVD menu, my ONLY OPTION is to mute it, press
fast-forward, and wait 20 or 30 minutes for it to play out. Killing media
center and restarting it doesn't work, it resumes the movie where it was.

Are there any keyboard shortcuts to do some of this? I hit ctrl-everything,
and some stuff changed, but I never got to the disc menu. The "help" appears
to be a few pages of mostly-not-useful information. Everything everywhere
refers to my non-existant remote.

Is there any way to run it from a keyboard?

Thanks,
Alan

The list of keyboard shortcuts that Jason provided should help a lot but really
there is no
substitute for the proper remote control especially if you are watching on a TV
screen. They are
cheap to buy around $30.
