Does Microsoft maintain any documents explaining the mandatory and optional
user rights that are maintained for the IIS IUSR_xxxx and ASPNET accounts?

You can refer to following links:

How to set required NTFS permissions and user rights for an IIS 5.0 Web
server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271071/

Default permissions and user rights for IIS 6.0
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812614/

I guess the key word in my question is "explaining". The documents you
provide are just a list of settings, no explanation for any of them.

Will, are there some particular ones of concern/interest?
Also, have you looked at the IIS 6 resource kit?
www.reskits.com

Things have changed _greatly_ with IIS versions, so be
careful when you search the net on this one. For example,
with IIS 4 you could define a dummy group used nowhere,
make Iusr_*/Iwam_* members of only the dummy, and
IIS worked. We are a long way from there now !!

I don't recall seeing you posting over into the
microsoft.public.inetserver.iis.security newsgroup
There are some good minds there that you would
not reach here.
