Greetings all,

I have a Toshiba model A75S206 17" laptop that will not turn on. It was
one month out of warranty when it quit working. I can plug in the power
supply and the indicator light on the laptop shows the power supply is
working. There is also an indicator light that shows the battery is
charging. But the laptop will not turn on. It won't boot up. It won't do
anything. I have spoken to Toshiba in Japan twice and they have said that
in order for them to do anything they need to know the serial number.
Ahhhh! That's another problem. The Toshiba label on the bottom of the
laptop is rubbed out just enough that the serial number is not completely
readable. A tool to find the serial number will only work if the laptop
will boot up.
Does anyone have any idea of how to find the serial number in any other
way? If I have the serial number I definitely want to get this taken care
of by Toshiba. They have said they will fix it if I can find the serial
number.

This laptop belongs to my son. It quit working exactly one month after
the one year warranty expired. He is in the U.S. Army and he deployed to
Iraq three days after the laptop quit. I am doing all I can to get it fixed
by Toshiba for him. I will be forever grateful for any help you can give me
in finding out what the serial number is. That's the key and the end of the
road. This was going to be his life-line while he was in Iraq.

Sincerely,
DBS

If you have the box that the laptop came in (laptop boxes should always
be kept), the serial number will be on a label on the box.

Otherwise, you are probably screwed.

[General comment, always photocopy the bottom of a new laptop. Not only
is the s/n there, but so is the Windows Product key, and the labels on
the bottom DO tend to get worn off.]

This is probably a major repair (motherboard) and may cost as much as a
new laptop. Extended warranties deserve serious consideration on a
laptop, since a repair to either the screen or the motherboard is often
not economically feasible otherwise.

This is my 22 year old son's laptop. He may be in Iraq but that doesn't
mean he's smart enough to save the damn box! In other
words............................you're right....I'm probably screwed.

As luck would have it, I just received a call from my son in Iraq 10 minutes
ago. I asked him if he saved the box and the good news is he did! The bad
news is that he's in Iraq and has the key to the storage unit in Kentucky
where the box is. If I was in Kentucky it still wouldn't be a big deal.
I'd break the door down. But I'm 715 miles away and the thought of driving
715 miles to break into a storage unit doesn't trip my trigger. In other
words..............I'm screwed.

Ok, you need someone in Kentucky (doesn't necessarily have to be you), a
bolt-cutter and a replacement lock (I'm kind of assuming that this is a
padlock). Or perhaps a locksmith. Actually, I would think that he
could get the key to you in 4-7 days (have him duplicate it first if
that is possible, in case it gets lost in the mail).
