Hi,

I wish to change my laptop with a USB 1 to USB2.

It does have a free mini PCI slot inside and I have been told that one can
upgrade to usb2 by putting a usb pci card in. It does NOT have a PMCIA slot.

Any help here please.

It is a non brand with the number N34AS1. I believe it is a Clevo, Highlander
or one of the many brands these came out as.

It is 2.4 CPU with 1MB ram and 20 GB hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

Wow, you are kidding, right? Something with 2.4GHZ with 1GB.... whoa
wait! 1MB of RAM? You mean 1GB right? With a 1MB, that would be like a
286 or a 386 (and some 486) machines made over 15 years ago. Oh with a
20GB HD... well that would put it about when the change over from USB1
to USB2 had taken place (2000-2002 era).

No PCMCIA slot you say? Btw, a lot of people call them PC Card slots
nowadays. I personally don't go for the idea that you can change the
name of them afterwards. Just with a mini PCI slot you say? Unless it is
one of those newer ExpressCard slots (which also has been called
mini-PCI slots before), I believe you just might be out of luck.

That sounds difficult. If you find a suitable USB2 mini-PCI card, how
are you going to connect it to the outside world? Unlike desktop PCI
cards, there is no back panel space automatically reserved for each PCI
card and thus no place to have USB jacks exposed to the outside.

Now, if your laptop's USB1 ports are mounted to the case, and connected
to the motherboard by a flexible cable, and the connector type and
pinout on this cable is the same on the motherboard and the mini-PCI
card, and the cable is long enough, then you may be able to move the
cable from the motherboard to the mini-PCI card and thus make the
existing USB ports USB2. But that's a lot of "ifs".

On the other hand, if your motherboard USB connectors are soldered to
the motherboard, you're going to have to unsolder them, or cut
motherboard traces, in order to wire them to the mini-PCI card.

Thank you.

For a start I meant 1GB Ram NOT MB!!

Yes I was also wondering about the connector slots however I thought maybe the
mini pci card would change the routing of the usb and turn the existing usb
slots into usb2.

Moving the connectors and all that I think is too much with too much risk into
messing with something else on the mobo.

It looks like I have no choice but to move up. It is a shame as I have gotten
used to this laptop which has not caused me one blink of trouble and I use it
everyday with it staying on through the a/c power for sometimes 2 weeks at a
time. Only had 1 battery change in 6 7 years..

Thanks again and I'll keep watching here for anymore comments..

Only if the motherboard was designed with that option in mind. Did the
laptop have a "USB2 option" when it was manufactured? Probably not.

Agreed. If you don't have a PC Card slot, you're probably stuck.

What do you need the USB2 port for anyway? If you want to add an
external USB disk, perhaps you can just upgrade the internal drive
instead. Or do you have a FireWire port? They are an alternative for
external disk.
