Hi,

Just drop by to enquire about a particular piece of information.

Is there any means to restrict the use of USB flash disk on a domain using
group policy?
I mean for instance you can restrict use of Floppy Drive, CD/DVD Drive and
so on.
I've been able to find an adm template on microsoft website that actually
prevents the USB driver to load.
The problem is: new PC's are delivered with USB Mouse and Keyboard!!

Thanks for answering my query.

Hi Eric,

This is possible. If you have Windows XP SP2 on your computers you can make
all USB drives read-only.

Here is how
Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2otech.mspx

under: "Controlling block storage devices on USB buses"

Still, you have to know that these restrictions can be bypassed by
determined users. There are also other ways for users to steal information
from the company -- specially if the users have access to the internet from
their computers.
