UK Smartphone Options? David Elders 08-09-2005

Hi all,

Looking for some info and advice if possible.

Existing Orange customer here in the UK. 5 users currently using SPV C500
happily. As part of our longer-term IT infrastructure roll-out we need to
move to Windows Mobile 2005-based products instead of our current Windows
Mobile 2003 2nd Edition. Obviously, the range of Smartphone/Pocket PC-based
products is wider now than it was a year ago also.

We're aware of various handsets at present:
C500 - as we already have - no clear upgrade path from Orange as to moving
to WM2005
C550 - looks like a clear development/upgrade of the C500 but Orange have
classed this as a consumer handset so we can't opt for this on our business
account [nor would it be supported by Business Customer Services]
M500 - looks like a kinda half-way-house between C500 and the M5000
M5000 - HTC Universal-based PDA due Q1 2006 with Orange
Motorola Moto Q - WM2005 Smartphone again due Q1 2006 [although no clear
dates/confirmation re Orange]

We're keen to find out what other handsets we should be considering, either
available now or on the radar for the short-medium term. Also aware that
this choice may well be limited by which handsets become/are supported by
Orange.

With regards feature set we'd prefer Smartphone over PDA-based from a purely
form factor perspective, although this is by no means set in stone.
Bluetooth is an absolute must. 3G and WiFi although they would naturally be
nice are not at this stage features that we'd regard as being
business-critical. If anything, such features would simply make ongoing
future feature expansion simpler.

Looking for pointers and reviews of how anyone who's used any of these has
found them through personal experience.

Thanks in advance,

David

STOP! don't buy any windows mobile phone without windows mobile 5.0
and THERE IS NO any upgrade path for existing phones to windows mobile 5.0.

so don't buy, just wait till october 2005, when windows mobile 5.0 devices
will start shipping...

Just heard back from our business manager at Orange.

M5000 [HTC Universal] will start shipping Sep 2005. C700 [which will replace
the C500 as an Orange business handset - they class the C550 as a consumer
handset] will start shipping Q1 2006. Both with Windows Mobile 5.0 and both
with 3G.

Cheers,

David
