It's the same layout on my Eee 2G Surf which I think is considered
part of the 700 series. But my fan is weird. It doesn't come on for 10
or 20 minutes (seems at random) then when it finally comes on it won't
go off until shutdown only running at one speed. It seems to be
completely independent of whatever the computer load is. Some on the
eeeuser group became annoyed with this and have actually removed the
fan with no reported problems. I'm not going to though, it's not that
annoying... ;)

Yes all of my 702 and 703 work the same except one, which I will get to
later. But if you are running Windows and that eeectl utility, you can
see the fan speed and the CPU temperature. And you have manual control
of the fan. Which ranges between 30% to 100% in 10% steps.
At 30%, it is very hard to hear the fan. So you might think it is off.
You should hear it if you put your ear up to the bottom of the netbook.
And it seems to me that it is always running at 30% or higher. 40% or
higher, one should have no problems hearing it. And at 100%, that thing
is really loud.
And normally, I only see these 702 and 703 only start out at 30% and can
stay there most of the time. Once in awhile, it might kick itself up to
40% for a little bit. But I haven't seen anything else happening.
Now this one 702 that is different has some sort of hardware problem. A
BIOS update was suppose to fix it. And it did for many, but not one of
mine. As the eeectl utility will suddenly report the CPU temp at
32°F/0°C and the fan jumps to 100%. I can still control it manually, so
no big deal. The only way to reset this condition is to remove the AC
and the battery and then reconnect it. And it might work for minutes to
hours before it happens again.

No Windows on my EeePC 2G Surf. Although others have put XP on this
little 2G SSD drive, it's very tight. In my case though I don't own a
copy of XP (other than non-transferable OEMs on my other laptops).

Nope, the fan is definitely not running. Again this is the 2G Surf, a
different animal. (For example there is no access plate on the
bottom.) This is probably the cheapest netbook ever made...

Many have had problems with Asus updates. I disconnected the updates
first thing. Your motto fits well, if it ain't broke... ;)

I remember well. Although I meant if you were running XP and that
utility. I haven't heard of one for Linux yet.

Yes I know about the 2G Surf model very well. You can't change the 512MB
of RAM either since it is soldered on the motherboard. If I had one, I
might be tempted to run XP off of a 4GB or 8GB SD card. Although that
would be a lot of work to get that to run.
And ok about the fan is off. I haven't seen this on any of my 702 and
703 models. As they toggle between 30% and 40%. But they are running 1GB
or 2GB of RAM too. Although I am convinced that most people can run
without a fan on these models.

Yes very good idea indeed. And if you don't listen, have a foolproof
plan B. And having a foolproof plan for the foolproof one called plan C

might be a good idea too. <grin>
